Description: To improve community health concerns and opportunities for physical activity, Keokuk Parks Foundation converted a long-neglected set of tennis courts into six pickleball courts. In addition, they installed two benches onsite, along with a trash receptacle and signage. Today, the local library offers pickleball equipment on loan at its nearby site, while members of the local pickleball club conduct free lessons. The new courts have turned a neighborhood eyesore into a vibrant, attractive recreational outlet for residents. Pickleball -- a fast-paced game modeled on tennis and ping-pong -- is popular with older adults because it is low-impact and friendly on aging joints.

Bethel, ME

Description: To provide residents with places to sit and gather, the Bethel Age-Friendly Community partnered with local artists and craftspeople to create benches and picnic tables. As a thank-you to organizations that have supported age-friendly work in the region, organizers gave the seating to partner organizations who assist with age-friendly programming, events and volunteer efforts. The benches and tables now sit in each of the six towns that make up the Bethel region. Each table is adorned with a chess board and each bench features decorations that pay homage to the town where it sits, with volunteers chipping in to paint the furniture. Organizers say they hope the project demonstrates the value of simple public space enhancements.

Project Category: Developing projects based on residents' priorities

Description: The Echo Park Film Center invited older community members to share their life stories via film. Twenty participants provided photos and memorabilia from their lives and recorded their voices, which EPFC staff and students used to create a short video for each person. The organization then held an outdoor screening to share the films with the community. One thing you realize when getting older is that your experiences are never lost, and you retrieve them at different parts of your life. And when you move on and most need it, it reappears and you are pleasantly amazed. And this is one of those experiences, participant Ida Talalla said in her video. The Echo Park Film Center gave me a chance to be creative with my reflections.
