Austin Park offered little for older adults, with no safe walking areas or seating. Volunteers cleared overgrown land and built a 1,000-foot ADA-compliant trail with a footbridge linking the park to town, plus five benches, two with wheelchair platforms. Evergreen trees were planted to restore privacy for nearby residents. The upgrades created a safe, accessible space for walking and resting, drawing families and older adults who previously avoided the park. A ribbon-cutting drew 50 attendees, half age 50-plus, and future plans include wildflower planting and creek stabilization. One resident note how the trail now offers a safe place to walk for himself and other residents.

Description: Many older adults in Mannington lacked affordable ways to stay active, with gyms and equipment out of reach for those on fixed incomes. The center installed outdoor fitness stations along a popular trail, adding options for strength and flexibility exercises in a safe, accessible setting. The project boosted motivation and social connection, helping residents improve balance and mobility. It also sparked plans to expand wellness programming and add equipment at the center, reinforcing a long-term commitment to healthy aging in the community.

Description: Taos' veterans and older adults lacked accessible green space and safe walking areas, a gap worsened by poverty and rising living costs. The project purchased ADA-compliant tables and benches, materials for a walking trail, and hired an architect. This led to the design of a multi-use space featuring a Veterans Memorial and fire pit for flag-retirement ceremonies. The space will host veteran-centered events and family gatherings, drawing hundreds of older adults annually. Volunteers praised the effort for fostering intergenerational learning and respect between veterans and younger community members.
Bennington, VT

Description: After the Town of Bennington removed an out-of-date play structure, Stark Street Park was essentially an empty field. To draw residents of all ages back to the Park, the Town's Office of Community Development devised a plan to add a natural playground, bicycle pump track and a quarter-mile walking path. This project added an accessible path, which loops around the playground. In addition, the Town planted a pollinator garden with perennial plants attractive to butterflies and bees, installed two wooden benches and erected a welcome sign at the park entrance. Since these improvements, the nearby hospital obtained land and trails, which connect to Stark Street Park. The town has also added a mountain bike course onsite.

Project Category: Public space activation
Description: The City of Kendallville was looking to add more greenspace to its downtown as part of a streetscape revitalization project. To achieve this, the City created an ADA-compliant pocket park with walking paths, tables, benches, shade pergolas and new trees and flowers. Organizers also added a large driveway to accommodate the village's mobile stage, which allows the space to host outdoor entertainment. Ambient lighting and parking pads for food trucks rounded out the improvements, which make the park welcoming for visitors of all ages and abilities.

Description: This project will improve pedestrian safety at three busy intersections in downtown Kendallville by installing 12 artistic crosswalks and "Yield to Pedestrian" signs.
