Johnsburg, NY
AARP Community Challenge Grant Year: 2025
Project Category: HomeFit Modifications
Description: In Johnsburg, many older adults with limited mobility faced unsafe bathrooms and hard-to-navigate entrances, putting daily routines and independence at risk. With limited means to pay for fixes, hazards went unaddressed. The committee launched a pilot HomeFit Modification Program and completed improvements in seven homes using volunteers and town staff. Work included entrance and bathroom upgrades and a critical wiring repair that removed a fire risk discovered during a visit. The pilot also prompted public and private commitments to continue the program in 2026 and expand the scope so more households can receive larger safety upgrades.

South Sioux City, NE
AARP Community Challenge Grant Year: 2022
Project Category: Park enhancements
Description: Siouxland Freedom Park lacked accessible paths, making it difficult for older adults and veterans with mobility challenges to reach its memorials. The project installed more than 8,000 square feet of concrete walkways connecting features like the Freedom Rock, gazebo and interpretive center, along with permanent signage. These improvements not only allow visitors to navigate the park safely but also spurred major investments, including plans for parking areas and a Korean War Memorial. This will create an even more inclusive space for reflection and connection.

Vermillion, SD
AARP Community Challenge Grant Year: 2018
Project Category: Park enhancements
Description: The game of horseshoes is popular with many residents in Vermillion. But the city's horseshoe court needed upgrades to make it accessible to people of all ages and abilities. To fix this, the City renovated the four-pit horseshoe court in Prentis Park. They upgraded the pits' clay surface, added an ADA-compliant sidewalk and purchased pit covers to keep the courts clear of weeds and debris. In the future, the City plans to add seating to accommodate spectators and allow player to rest between rounds. Since the renovations, the courts have drawn residents of all ages. City staff plan for the site to host horseshoe leagues, tournaments and other events.
