Description: To give people an outdoor space to socialize in the heart of downtown, the City of Monroe transformed its visitor center's concrete patio into a new mini-park. The City brightened up the area by adding planters, seating, outdoor games and a mural painted by local youth. The City then unveiled the new space during the local fall festival. Additionally, project organizers made enhancements to the existing hammock park located next to the visitor's center. The site offers visitors a spot to relax in one of several hammocks. To accommodate more foot traffic, the City added bench swings and pergolas for shade. Inspired by the visitor center improvements, nearby businesses put out their own planters by their storefronts. Project organizers say the upgrades helped lift the spirits of residents during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Description: Downtown Fort Fairfield lacked green space, leaving older adults without a safe, accessible spot to relax or connect. The library created a Community Memorial Garden with an ADA-compliant path, electrified gazebo, memorial benches and solar lighting. The space now hosts programs like tea socials and poetry readings and offers free Wi-Fi for those without home internet. Residents visit to honor loved ones. One woman said she comes to visit with her sister at a memorial bench. The project has spurred donations and volunteer support, ensuring the garden remains a vibrant community hub.

Description: Organizers at the Waikiki Community Center at originally planned to beautify Waikiki neighborhoods by painting utility boxes with cultural images. When that project got derailed due to permit challenges, they pivoted to do much needed sidewalk safety and repair -- something local older adults identified as a community need. The Center led a campaign to educate residents of Waikiki on pedestrian safety and worked with volunteers to patch and repair more than 100 damaged areas of sidewalk. Volunteers also beautified the area along sidewalks by refreshing or replacing planter boxes.

Description: To help residents afford needed services and connect with one another, Kanu Hawaii expanded the local timebank program, an economic exchange based on skill-sharing in which participants barter services. Engaging an experienced timebank coordinator, the organization expanded the Kokua Exchange from three localized timebanks on one island to 14 timebanks statewide. In addition, organizers trained volunteers to become timebank coordinators and developed a member database to track exchanges within local communities.
