Reno, NV
AARP Community Challenge Grant Year: 2024
Project Category: Walk Audits
Description: Uneven sidewalks, unsafe intersections and disrepair in Reno's dining districts made walking difficult, especially for older adults. The organization led walk audits in three districts, gathering firsthand observations and community feedback, even during snowy conditions, to capture real-world challenges. Data from these audits will guide future design and connectivity improvements and strengthen advocacy for upgrades. One participant who attended a pre-walk meeting said that she was encouraged to learn, engage and provide feedback, and she then rallied others to complete the route.
North Augusta, SC
AARP Community Challenge Grant Year: 2024
Project Category: Walk Audits
Description: Uneven sidewalks and poorly marked crossings made downtown North Augusta difficult to navigate, especially for older adults. A walk audit engaged residents age 50-plus to identify hazards and suggest fixes. The project included two community meetings and immediate upgrades like better lighting and safer crossings. Findings informed updates to the downtown master plan and sparked momentum for long-term improvements. One participant said it felt empowering to voice concerns and later see changes such as traffic-calming features, making trips to meet friends or run errands more confident and enjoyable.

Project Category: Digital navigation skills
Description: Older adults in the community faced barriers to digital access, leaving many isolated and unable to manage daily tasks or support small businesses. It served nearly 40 students who learned to navigate the internet and create documents, often for the first time. The program boosted confidence and inspired continued learning, with graduates volunteering to help peers and advocating for advanced topics like web design and payment processing. "It has been such a great experience... I have gained so much," said a former student turned volunteer.
