Blacksburg, VA
AARP Community Challenge Grant Year: 2022
Project Category: Public art installations
Description: To help downtown recover from pandemic isolation, the Association created a mural that celebrates nature and local heritage. An artist age 50-plus designed the 20-by-10-foot piece featuring Stroubles Creek and native plants, turning a blank wall into a vibrant landmark. The mural now anchors plans for an art walk and streetscape, drawing older adults and other residents into public spaces. "It was my pleasure to participate in such a great event," said one supporter, noting the mural's role in showcasing local talent and sparking renewed interest in public art.
Reno, NV
AARP Community Challenge Grant Year: 2023
Project Category: Public art installations
Description: A Reno neighborhood plagued by aging sidewalks and poor walkability needed a way to restore pride and connection. The project led six design workshops and volunteer days to prepare walls for three large murals co-created by residents and local artists. These vibrant installations transformed neglected spaces into community landmarks, strengthened social ties and spotlighted safety issues like missing sidewalks and crosswalks. The effort is expected to inspire future art projects and advocacy for street improvements, creating a more inviting and connected environment for older adults and neighbors alike.
Cusick, WA
AARP Community Challenge Grant Year: 2022
Project Category: Public art installations
Description: Community spaces on the reservation lacked cultural expression, leaving the powwow grounds and walking routes without art. The tribe launched a utility box art project, installing eight vibrant wraps along high-traffic areas after soliciting designs from local artists. Many of the community's elders helped select artwork that reflects tribal heritage, strengthening intergenerational ties. The colorful additions have sparked pride and conversations about future murals and sculptures. "The new boxes look great... they add so much color to the walking path," said one resident.

Project Category: Park enhancements
Description: Folker Park is a 2-acre urban forest located within the city of Anchorage. The park is adjacent to intergenerational living facilities and in the past was used by people of all ages. However, many of the park's volunteer caretakers have stopped routine maintenance, leaving many areas overgrown and essentially unusable. To improve the park, the Anchorage Park Foundation installed six outdoor musical instruments, a reflexology footpath, a healing maze and age-accessible fitness equipment. They also gathered volunteers to weed garden beds, pick up trash and plant flowers. Today, the park a central hub for the community once again, and a source of pride for residents.
Anchorage, AK
AARP Community Challenge Grant Year: 2024
Project Category: Housing Choice Design Competitions
Description: Anchorage's shortage of small multi-family housing with accessible units leaves older adults few options to age in place. To address this, a design competition engaged architects, builders and aging experts to create realistic plans for 2-4 unit homes with ground-floor accessibility. Designs were unveiled at public events, including a First Friday showcase that drew nearly 1,500 attendees and sparked dialogue on housing solutions. Two designs could be built under current codes, and one resident shared, "I love my mom living with us...I would always choose to have my mom live with us."
