Community spaces on the reservation lacked cultural expression, leaving the powwow grounds and walking routes without art. The tribe launched a utility box art project, installing eight vibrant wraps along high-traffic areas after soliciting designs from local artists. Description: As part of efforts to create a new, multi-use community space, the Loogootee Beautification Committee commissioned a local artist to create a massive mural downtown. Community members worked with the artist to plan the artwork, which they then installed on the side of an abandoned building on Loogootee's main square. Description: After acquiring a new, 180-acre forest property, organizers with the Kanitsu Land Trust wanted to ensure people of all ability levels could enjoy it. So they created an all-abilities trail to draw visitors to the site. Pine Street Woods now boasts half a mile of accessible walkways, as well as four new benches. Since completing these improvements, the Land Trust reports an uptick in trail use, with over 100 visitors per day in summer 2020. The trail now serves as an example to municipal leaders of how to address accessibility challenges that limit outdoor access for those with mobility issues.
East Hope, ID

Description: With few public facilities, East Hope lacked a reliable, weather-protected place for residents to gather, leaving older adults without a steady hub for events or everyday connection. The city built a permanent 16x18 pavilion that adds shade and shelter for concerts, celebrations and volunteer days, with residents preparing the site ahead of construction. It immediately improved the annual tree lighting by keeping people dry and comfortable. A city clerk called the project a significant achievement, reflecting local pride and momentum for future funding.
