Milbank lacked basic amenities in parks and trails, making it harder for older adults and families to stay active and hydrated. The group installed benches at Flynn Nature Trail, added bike racks in four parks and placed two outdoor water fountains near walking areas and pickleball courts. They also donated playground equipment to Lake Farley Park. These upgrades made parks more inviting and supported healthy activity for all ages. Residents have expressed excitement and the improvements sparked ideas for future projects like a sculpture garden.

Located in the Menomonee River Hills neighborhood, the intergenerational space features a gravel patio area, as well as wheelchair-accessible tables with built-in game boards, benches, an information kiosk and new landscaping. Previously, the City installed a new playground, walking path and fitness equipment at the park. Project organizers say in recent years the neighborhood has welcomed an influx of new families -- including those from the Hmong community -- underscoring the need for a public space for neighbors to meet and socialize.
Grafton, ND

Description: Grafton lacked inclusive spaces that encourage social connection and mental engagement for older adults. The city installed Harmony Garden, an interactive musical park featuring 15 instrument structures, benches and landscaping along a four-mile bike path. Volunteers added trees, perennials and recycled mulch to create a welcoming environment. The park now offers free access to music-based sensory therapy and a unique spot for older adults to rest and interact. Plans include adding a butterfly sculpture and hosting community events to deepen its role as a gathering place.

Description: The Madison Mercantile launched a Digital Literacy Lab to close a critical gap for older residents in a rural county where most services are online. The lab now offers computers, teleconference equipment and a wheelchair-accessible desk, with staff and volunteers guiding users. A soundproof room enables private telemedicine visits, and partnerships with tech support groups ensure devices work properly. By replacing a discontinued mobile computer program, the lab provides lasting digital access and strengthens community ties.
