Dillon, MT
AARP Community Challenge Grant Year: 2025
Project Category: Transportation Other
Description: Older adults walking near a busy park area faced safety concerns where vehicle traffic and low-visibility crossings made streets harder to navigate. The City of Dillon addressed this by installing seasonally themed, high-visibility crosswalks designed to draw driver attention and make pedestrian routes easier to see. Community members took part in painting and safety activities that reinforced pedestrian awareness. Many older adults shared appreciation for the clearer crossings and focus on walkability. The improvements increased visibility and helped slow traffic in key areas, while strong community response prompted discussions about expanding similar treatments to other high-risk locations.

St. Johnsbury, VT
AARP Community Challenge Grant Year: 2021
Project Category: Community Gardens
Description: To give residents access to fresh produce, the Vermont Community Garden Network installed garden beds at two affordable housing complexes in St. Johnsbury and Newport. Over several building days, volunteers worked to clear old wood and debris, cut boards to construct the raised beds, fill them with soil and plant garlic bulbs for residents to harvest in the spring. To ensure the crop's success, they also held a demonstration to teach residents how to plant, care for and harvest garlic. In addition to improving residents' physical health through nutritious food, organizers say the gardens will support mental health, too, by combating social isolation. The Network continues to host workshops and provide seeds, tools and other support to gardeners at both housing complexes.

Cathedral Square installed a rectangular rapid flashing beacon at the crosswalk, making pedestrians more visible to drivers. The improvement enhances access to public transportation, groceries and community resources, helping residents stay connected and reducing isolation. Residents expressed excitement about using the new signal, which offers a safer way to navigate their town.
