Berlin, MD
AARP Community Challenge Grant Year: 2018
Project Category: Public space activation
Description: To give people a place to sit, rest and enjoy a meal, the Town of Berlin purchased tables and seating. The Town sets up the outdoor furniture during events on Main Street. The new amenities also make downtown more accessible, since older adults and people with mobility challenges have a space to rest. Since the improvements, project organizers say residents no longer need to sit on the curb as they eat their lunch.
Caldwell, ID
AARP Community Challenge Grant Year: 2018
Project Category: Public space activation
Description: Organizers with Destination Caldwell think of Indian Creek Plaza like the front porch on a farmhouse -- a place for sitting and chatting with neighbors. The nonprofit hoped to activate the space with interactive outdoor games. They engaged residents to decoupage vintage photographs onto cornhole boards and piece together glass-mosaic tabletop gameboards for chess, checkers and backgammon. This project is part of larger efforts to bring public art to the plaza. Today, the game tables are available throughout the year.
Bethel Region, ME
AARP Community Challenge Grant Year: 2021
Project Category: Public space activation
Description: To provide residents with places to sit and gather, the Bethel Age-Friendly Community partnered with local artists and craftspeople to create benches and picnic tables. As a thank-you to organizations that have supported age-friendly work in the region, organizers gave the seating to partner organizations who assist with age-friendly programming, events and volunteer efforts. The benches and tables now sit in each of the six towns that make up the Bethel region. Each table is adorned with a chess board and each bench features decorations that pay homage to the town where it sits, with volunteers chipping in to paint the furniture. Organizers say they hope the project demonstrates the value of simple public space enhancements.

Heppner, OR
AARP Community Challenge Grant Year: 2025
Project Category: Disaster Preparedness
Description: Many older adults in Morrow County lacked access to practical emergency preparedness training, leaving homebound and isolated residents at greater risk during disasters. The project offered sessions in Heppner and Boardman led by the state's Community Preparedness Coordinator, providing participants with 3-day emergency kits and radios. Attendance exceeded expectations with full rooms and active engagement during the discussions. One site had to add extra seating showing how strong the need had become. The training boosted awareness, strengthened local involvement and set the stage for a two-week readiness program now being planned with partners.

Moro, OR
AARP Community Challenge Grant Year: 2022
Project Category: Accessory dwelling units, tiny homes and manufactured housing
Description: With few housing options, older adults in Moro struggled to downsize or live near family. The city responded by creating two permit-ready ADU designs with accessibility features, shaped by public input and offered free at City Hall. The plans, shared with neighboring Condon, cut design costs and made construction easier. The project sparked enthusiasm for ADUs, a housing type newly allowed in 2022, and is expected to lead to the first builds soon. "It has been wonderful to see members of both city councils... getting excited about ADUs," one participant said.
