Description: Many older adults in the region faced food insecurity and few chances to connect with others in a safe outdoor space. SCAP began building an accessible community garden by installing raised beds, completing water infrastructure, adding wildlife fencing and planting shade trees with help from volunteers. These steps created the foundation for a shared space where people of all ages and abilities can grow produce and learn gardening skills. During planting work, older adults from the nearby senior center stopped to ask questions, and one woman said the chance to volunteer and receive produce would make a real difference for her. The garden is expected to reduce isolation, improve access to fresh food and become a long-term hub for learning, connection and healthier living.

Description: KNOX rebuilt and upgraded the Hartford's Broad Street Community Garden to allow people of all ages and abilities to easily garden there. They added 22 raised garden beds, making plots more accessible to children, people with disabilities and older residents. Additionally, the organization hired a contractor to repair a garden fence and purchased a picnic table and a pergola -- a structure to create shade for gardeners. Since then, KNOX continues to create gardening opportunities for Hartford residents. The Hartford Courant reported in 2021 that KNOX manages 20 community gardens with a cumulative five acres of space. These include nearly 660 plots, each with an average size of 12 square feet.

Description: Many of Reno's Native residents have limited access to fresh produce. To provide nutritious food to local families, the Center for Healthy Aging concerted a vacant lot into an intergenerational, indigenous community garden. The Center wanted to ensure the space was accessible and welcoming, so it installed ADA-compliant benches, raised garden beds and LED lighting in the space. Today, the garden hosts programming for people of all ages, including culinary classes, culturally relevant gardening instruction and a harvest festival.

Description: Photos and stories honoring local veterans were at risk of fading from public view, leaving families and community members unaware of a shared history that holds deep meaning for many older adults. The library addressed this by digitizing the Veterans Wall of Honor and creating a permanent digital display that is easy to access and expand. Residents were encouraged to contribute photos and information, growing the collection and bringing new visibility to the Wall. When the updated display was unveiled during a community Veterans Day program, attendees reacted emotionally as they saw their own images or those of deceased loved ones recognized. The digital format now protects these stories from deterioration and allows the Wall to continue growing, ensuring that veterans service and sacrifice remain visible to future generations.

Project Category: Engaging residents in vibrant public places
Description: Athens has a rich African American history that spans many generations, yet has lacked an appropriate venue to share its stories. The Downtown Athens Development Authority created a permanent exhibit at the Ware-Lydon House Museum about people enslaved in the region, which also featured stories about their descendants. The exhibit was developed alongside the museum's new, 40-volume African American heritage library and community conversation area, which includes tables and chairs where visitors can gather. Additionally, the Authority developed the first section of an African American Heritage Pathway walking tour, which travels between the museum and the home of one of the first vaudeville theaters in the U.S. built, owned, and operated by a Black entrepreneur.
