Baltimore, MD
AARP Community Challenge Grant Year: 2022
Project Category: Lifelong housing and accessibility
Description: Vacant homes in Baltimore contributed to neglected neighborhoods and limited housing options for older adults with low incomes. Adopt a Block renovated an abandoned house, replacing structural elements and installing new fixtures, flooring and appliances. More than 150 volunteers assisted professional contractors, and the home was donated mortgage-free to a qualifying older adult. The project removed a unused property and provided stable housing, demonstrating how revitalization can create lasting impact and inspire community engagement.

With ADA-compliant features, including a concrete path and benches, the space is accessible to gardeners of all ages and abilities. Since the relocation, the garden provides fresh produce to families in need throughout Shakopee.
