Madison County installed permanent outdoor equipment-including pull-downs, sky walkers and chin-up bars-at the health department campus. The space was introduced with a ribbon-cutting event. The equipment is in heavy use, encouraging healthier habits and family interaction. One resident said adding the low-impact machines to her routine helped her lose weight and improve health, calling the free access "convenient and life-changing."

Savonburg, KS

Description: City leaders hoped to give Savonburg residents a park suitable for people of all ages. The City, in partnership with a local service club, added a quarter-mile walking trail, ADA-compliant picnic tables and benches to the park. Built next to a new children's playground, the additions allow intergenerational families to enjoy the public greenspace.

Project Category: Trails
Description: Many trails on St. Croix were impassable after hurricane damage. As part of disaster recovery efforts, Virgin Islands Trail Alliance restored eight miles of rainforest trails. To do this, volunteers cut through foliage, cleared weeds, pulled up roots and raked up debris, allowing the trails to reopen. Additionally, they installed new signage, which help visitors navigate, communicate trail rules and identify tree species. The activation effort also involved installing picnic tables and benches along the path to give people a space to rest. To help visitors access the trails, volunteers cleared parking areas and installed bollards to prevent people from driving vehicles onto the trails. Volunteer workers included participants in a nonprofit program carpentry skills program. Since the restoration, project organizers say hikers and cyclists have returned to the trails.
Christiansted, VI
AARP Community Challenge Grant Year: 2026
Project Category: Public space activation
Description: Educational, ADA‑friendly signage will be installed along a new walking trail at a historic site. The trail will support those volunteering with rescued animals, improve safety while dog‑walking and promote wellness for older adults.
