For decades, outdated facilities at the Bison Range limited Tribal elders' ability to gather and connect with their heritage. The Tribes addressed this by installing a wheelchair-accessible shelter near a popular trail and adding ADA-compliant picnic tables, fire rings and pedestal grills-features designed for safety and ease of use. These upgrades transformed the Visitor Center area into an inclusive space for cultural events and family outings. The project also set the stage for broader accessibility improvements, including a redesigned entrance and safer walking paths, reinforcing the Range's role as a place where history and community thrive.

Hot Springs, AR
AARP Community Challenge Grant Year: 2020
Project Category: Public space activation
Description: This project activated a space along Malvern Avenue, allowing visitors to enjoy a new mural paying tribute to cultural history. To showcase the mural, the City added a new sidewalk, greenery, iron sculptures and a music-themed bench nearby. The work was among the first reinvestments in an area that was known from the 1930s to 1960s as Black Broadway -- home to entertainment venues which hosted performances by legendary musicians, including Count Basie, Duke Ellington and B.B. King. Since its completion, the space -- which the City named Henry Glover Place -- has helped spark further revitalization. The City undertook four other neighborhood improvement projects nearby, including upgrades to a parking lot, new landscaping and building restorations. The City plans to make additional streetscape improvements in the future.
Halstead, KS

Description: The Kansas Learning Center for Health addressed isolation and health disparities by creating a welcoming outdoor space in Halstead. Eight benches and four swings were installed in the community garden, fitness area and shaded historic corner, giving older adults safe places to rest and connect. Volunteers and residents age 50-plus added 20 colorful art pieces to concrete pads, turning the area into a vibrant destination. The project has boosted walkability and social engagement, with one participant noting, "I go walking daily and it has been a blessing to have places to stop and rest."
Wilton, NH

Description: In a rural town where many older residents lacked shaded, accessible spaces and opportunities for meaningful engagement, Wilton built a handicap-accessible gazebo along the riverwalk and launched a Senior Citizen Science Program. Volunteers age 55-plus assembled the structure and ramp, creating the first shaded amenity downtown. Thirty older adults joined the program to collect wildlife data for conservation efforts. The gazebo quickly became a social hub for gatherings and nature observation, while the science program reconnected residents with their community and informed updates to the town's Natural Resource Inventory.

Description: On the Flathead Reservation, many older adults face food insecurity and chronic health issues tied to poor nutrition. The project installed eight gardening boxes, purchased lumber for 20 more and provided seeds and soil. Volunteers built boxes and planted vegetables, creating spaces for growing food and teaching traditional preservation. The garden now supplies fresh produce to older adult meal programs and homebound older adults, improving nutrition and reducing isolation. "I was able to plant my salad vegetables with my grandchildren... They enjoyed watering, picking and tasting what we grew," one resident said.
Arlee, MT

Description: Older adults in Arlee lacked places to gather, leaving many isolated from community life. That changed when picnic tables and benches were added to the new garden site, giving residents a spot to rest, share stories and watch volunteers harvest more than 4,600 pounds of fresh produce. Three generations joined cleanup and planting events, turning the space into a hub for connection. Older adults now have a welcoming place to join the conversation, and plans for an expanded garden and orchard promise even more opportunities to strengthen ties and advance food sovereignty.
