In the neighborhoods surrounding Prince Hall Park and Willows Park, a large percentage of residents lack reliable access to broadband internet. To help meet this need, the City of Orlando installed wheelchair accessible, solar powered tables and shade structures -- each outfitted with charging stations and Wi-Fi hotspots -- at both neighborhood parks. Rated for 175 mile-per-hour winds, the tables can sustain hurricane-strength gusts, allowing residents to use them to charge phones, call loved ones or access emergency information during disaster scenarios. Local artists painted the concrete pads that anchor the two tables to depict positive images representing the community.

Description: Many residents of College Place lacked access to reliable high-speed internet. To address this, the City of College Place installed hotspots at parks, playgrounds, outdoor movie venues, farmers markets and the local municipal center. Organizers ensured each chosen location had a parking lot, allowing residents to access the internet from their vehicles. To spread the word, the City posted signs advertising the hotspots and City staff attended community events to discuss the free Wi-Fi initiative. Project organizers say public Wi-Fi helps residents access important online resources, such as local job postings. Additionally, the undertaking strengthened the City's relationship with the local school district and affordable housing providers.

Description: In rural Jones County, many older adults faced isolation and limited access to books, technology and health resources due to poverty and transportation barriers. The library transformed a rundown trolley into LOTTIE, a mobile hub equipped with Wi-Fi, laptops, books and programming supplies. It now delivers technology classes, health clinics and library services directly to neighborhoods and care centers. This has helped bridge the digital divide and served to foster increased social connection. One patron in her late 70s said receiving books and audiobooks at home after months of isolation "made me cry," showing how the project restored joy and independence for older residents.

Description: Reliable internet was out of reach for many Philadelphia residents, leaving older adults disconnected and unable to manage essential tasks. The project installed free Wi-Fi across senior residences and nearby public spaces, hosted town halls and distributed 100 laptops with digital literacy training. The network now serves hundreds, easing financial strain and improving access to telehealth and communication. One resident shared gratitude, saying older adults are often overlooked when it comes to technology access.

Description: To make accessory dwelling units easier to understand and use, Orlando launched an education campaign focused on aging in place. The city created bilingual brochures, enhanced its website and hosted six community sessions plus a major event on home safety. Nearly 400 people attended, and materials remain available online and at community centers. The effort clarified permitting and financing options, helping families explore ADUs as a housing solution. As one participant noted, "Families need clear guidance on what makes an ADU and why it matters."

Project Category: Public space activation
Description: To promote safe, physical distancing during the COVID-19 pandemic, Curry Ford West created a pop-up park on a vacant lot. During a community event, two-hundred volunteers constructed a labyrinth onsite made of brightly painted recycled pallets. The park remained in place for a month. Project organizers say the park and labyrinth helped connect the community during a time when people were separated. They also report the pop-up project helped demonstrate to local government leaders the importance of community green space. In the future, Curry Ford West hopes to install more pop-up parks as part of its advocacy for more public spaces in Orlando.
