Description: Cromwell Creative District focused on two public spaces that residents used often but struggled to navigate. Uneven surfaces and aging infrastructure at Valour Green and the Pierson Park Rose Garden made it harder for older adults and people with mobility challenges to sit, walk and spend time in places meant for gathering and reflection. The project rebuilt these spaces with practical access improvements, including benches set on solid pavers and smoother paths that connect to sidewalks. At the Rose Garden, outdated features were removed and the layout reworked so people using wheelchairs or walking aids could move safely. Veterans called to share appreciation for safer seating at Valour Green, and residents described returning to the Rose Garden for regular walks. By restoring access to spaces not updated for decades, the project made everyday park use more comfortable and set a foundation for continued care and planting by volunteers.

Alamogordo, NM

These improvements have made the site safer and more inviting, encouraging residents to use it for recreation and events. Community feedback has been overwhelmingly positive, and plans are underway for expanded sidewalks and new programs for older adults.

Description: To organizers with the Downtown Lynchburg Association, an underused, dead-end street had potential to draw visitors downtown. The Association transformed the space into Art Alley -- a vibrant, outdoor art gallery. To activate the space, volunteers covered the pavement in turquoise, orange, pink and green paint. They also set up string lights overhead to provide illumination. Finally, they created the Spark Joy Gallery by installing panels that display digital artworks. Project organizers say the placemaking effort has since inspired nearby property owners to spruce up their building facades, and the Art Alley has become a must-see for tourists passing through town.

Description: Older adults lacked inclusive, low-impact recreation options, and temporary courts limited year-round play. The county built a permanent bocce court with ADA features, including a hinged entry for mobility aids, and added benches and equipment. One participant using a walker said she was thrilled with the ease of accessing the court, underscoring its role in helping residents stay active and engaged.
