Aguila, AZ
AARP Community Challenge Grant Year: 2021
Project Category: Public space activation
Description: The Aguila Community Center in rural Aguila is a community hub for residents of all ages, despite its aging infrastructure, leaky roof and signs of wear and tear. To make the facility useable during the monsoon season, leaders at the center fixed the concrete floor with laminate plank flooring and weatherized the roof to make the facility fully functional. Since the improvements, the Aguila Community Center has hosted COVID-19 vaccine clinics, fitness classes, quincenearas and other community celebrations and events during all months of the year.

Description: This project will create an ADA accessible entry into Walter E. Hall Park, enhancing access for all residents. It will open a closed utility corridor and build a paved pathway, connecting the park to nearby neighborhoods.

Description: This project activated a space outside the Genesis apartment community. Volunteers painted murals and installed lighting, planters and seating. This enabled organizers to state a fall harvest festival for residents.

Project Category: Engaging people in transportation options/safety
Description: To help residents of Salem get around town, this project activated a vacant downtown storefront to create a pop-up summer program. Free and available to people of all ages and abilities, the program provided hands-on educational opportunities to help assist residents -- and especially older adults -- navigate the local public transit system. It also assisted participants find their way around downtown Salem.
