Corydon, IN

AARP Community Challenge Grant Year: 2022

Project Category: Public or private transit access

Description: Rural residents in Southern Indiana, especially older adults and people with disabilities, lacked reliable transportation to health care and other essentials. Blue River Services expanded its transit system into Floyd County, hired additional drivers and launched public awareness campaigns. The service now offers door-to-door rides with wheelchair-accessible vehicles and trained staff. This expansion closed a critical gap and secured funding for a new vehicle to sustain service. One rider shared, "I am so very thankful that I now have reliable transportation to and from Baptist Hospital for treatment each week... I would not be able to go places without them!"

Culpeper, VA

AARP Community Challenge Grant Year: 2021

Project Category: Public or private transit access

Description: To inform older adults in rural Virginia about regional transportation options, the Rappahannock-Rapidan Regional Commission launched its Trusted Community Partner campaign. The initiative awards a gold seal designation to vetted transportation service providers in Culpeper, Fauquier, Madison, Orange and Rappahannock Counties. Organizers then worked to educate the community about the seal's significance. To reach residents, the Commission distributed fliers describing the program, created a website and installed benches with advertising. Organizers also presented at nearly 150 community meetings. Additionally, they displayed information about the TCP seal on passenger vans, which they drove through the community. Ultimately, the Commission hopes the seal inspires trust among older adults looking for transportation options. Every provider displaying the TCP gold seal must use drivers that are screened, trained and insured.

St. Louis, MO

AARP Community Challenge Grant Year: 2023

Project Category: Public or private transit access

Description: The #70 Grand bus route in Saint Louis lacked seating and shelter, forcing riders-many older adults-to perch on tree fencing or wait in rain and heat. A new sustainable bus shelter now offers seating, solar lighting and a planter box with native plants, creating a safer and more comfortable wait. The design prompted Metro to adopt similar features and drew interest in solar upgrades for future shelters. A longtime rider said he's "so happy to finally have a bus shelter" for errands, underscoring how small changes can transform daily transit for older adults.

AARP Community Challenge Grant Year: 2023

Project Category: Public space activation

Description: The City of Chillicothe transformed a neglected lot in the Sixth Ward into its first neighborhood park, addressing a lack of green space in an area with high obesity rates and low life expectancy. The new pocket park features ADA-compliant walkways, benches, picnic tables and a playground, all within a fenced, well-lit space. Residents now have a safe place to gather and stay active, with one grandmother sharing that her grandkids "are so excited to walk to the park and play" while she enjoys sitting nearby.

Lancaster, OH

AARP Community Challenge Grant Year: 2024

Project Category: Bike Audits

Description: A bike path connecting a high school and a community park lacked safety features, prompting two audits to identify hazards and gather community input. Residents, local partners and an injury prevention specialist joined the effort, and feedback was shared with the city planner to guide upgrades. Plans now include safer crossings and enhancements like public art, while the audit report will support funding applications for long-term improvements. One older participant suggested organizing groups to keep the path clean, reflecting strong community engagement.
