Description: Richlands had few accessible parks, leaving older adults and people with disabilities without safe spaces for fitness or social connection. The "Fit for Life" project added wheelchair-accessible swings, air walkers and benches to an underused park, while volunteers brightened the space with colorful features. Now, older adults can exercise, socialize and join community outings in a park designed for everyone. Description: To create social opportunities for people of all ages, the Town of New Milford added benches and game top tables along the walkway to the Young's Field Park. Town employees installed the tables, which can host chess and checkers games. Project organizers say they hope the tables encourage intergenerational activities in the riverfront park. Today, teens from a New Milford High School after-school club use the table for regular games with players from the New Milford Senior Center.

Description: As part of efforts to attract visitors to its downtown, the City of West Fargo hoped to turn its POW/MIA Plaza on Sheyenne Street into a gathering space. To do this, the City purchased game tables for a previously underused portion of the plaza. "This project helped demonstratethe importance of creating opportunities for fun and safe activities in the city's new and improved downtown area," City Planner Malachi Petersen said. "It is our hope that this project will lead to future projects which encourage walkability and active lifestyles in our community." Today the plaza hosts community events, including a farmers market. Project organizers hope to replicate the games in other parts of West Fargo in the future.

Project Category: Pedestrian Safety
Description: Folkways focused on a downtown intersection where worn pavement and faint crosswalk markings made it harder for people walking, including older adults, to cross safely. The unclear layout limited visibility and reduced driver awareness in a space with steady foot traffic. Working with a local artist and community volunteers, the project installed a ground mural with clearly marked crosswalks and painted bump-outs that visually calm traffic. Residents of different ages took part in the installation, reinforcing the street's role as a shared space. The finished mural improved crossing visibility, helped slow vehicles and created a recognizable landmark that supports ongoing community use and stewardship.
