To make the Footbridge Park Plaza safer and more inviting, the Carriage Town Neighborhood Association added benches, trash receptacles and a dog clean-up station to the space. They also upgraded lighting, allowing visitors to more safely use the plaza at night. Many Carriage Town residents use the footbridge to walk to and from Flint's downtown. After the improvements, project organizers polled locals and found 80 percent said they were more likely to use the plaza. Neighbors have since begun work on a second plaza nearby.

Ferrum, VA

Description: Friends of Ferrum Park responded to the lack of safe, accessible outdoor space that had limited physical activity and social connection for older adults in this rural community. The project built the first section of an ADA-accessible walking trail, a quarter-mile crushed-gravel path with stable surfaces, space for side-by-side walking, benches for rest and accessible parking at the trailhead. Volunteers, including older adults, helped install the improvements, reinforcing community ownership. The new trail created a permanent, no-cost place to walk, meet neighbors and attend events. Early use shows older adults returning for gentle daily activity that was not possible before. One regular visitor shared that the smoother surface let him walk farther and maintain routines that matter, setting the stage for future accessibility improvements.

Grand Junction, CO

Description: Grand Junction Parks and Recreation created a strength training circuit along a walking path in Sherwood Park. To achieve this, GJPR installed four pieces of equipment for working out leg, arm and core muscles, including a rowing machine, sit up and pull up station and leg press. The park once housed similar fitness equipment, but GJCR had to remove it in the mid-nineties due to rot. Today, many residents of the surrounding neighborhoods are 50 and older, and the new equipment gives them an option for a cardio workout and strength training. The fitness stations are available to the public seven days a week and those interested can register for free instruction on how to use them.

Description: An ADA-compliant concrete ramp will be added to the restroom building at Green Trails Park. The ramp will allow people using wheelchairs, walkers or strollers to enter the restrooms safely and independently.

Description: Genesee County struggles with food insecurity and chronic disease, challenges worsened by the pandemic and Flint's water crisis. To address these issues, the coalition expanded gardens at nine sites, adding accessible raised beds, farm fields and in-ground plots. Volunteers repaired a greenhouse and launched a countywide garden network to share resources and expertise. These efforts are creating lasting change by increasing access to fresh produce and safe outdoor activity for older adults. "We would like to have as much in the works as we can to grow big for spring... We have built a lot of excitement!" said a food pantry director.
