Central Avenue had a long record of severe crashes, making daily walking hazardous for older adults relying on the corridor for basic needs. Capital Streets led walk audits that documented long crossing distances, limited signals and infrastructure that made navigating the road stressful. They brought partners to see conditions firsthand and shared results through a report and public event to build pressure for stronger improvements in the coming redesign. The project energized community advocacy and set the stage for sustained work on safer crossings and signals for older adults.

Description: Cracked, overgrown sidewalks in one Muskogee neighborhood forced residents with mobility challenges into the street, turning routine trips into safety risks and limiting independence for older adults. Sheena's Helping Hands organized community walk audits to document hazards along local walking routes, with older adult volunteers, residents and business owners helping capture on-the-ground conditions. The findings highlighted broken pavement, blocked paths and unsafe crossings that made wheelchair and cane use difficult. One participant recalled how a wheelchair user had to push herself to the store using her foot and repeatedly enter traffic because sidewalks were impassable, adding, "We feared for her safety." The audit results were shared with city leaders and public works staff, providing concrete evidence to support complaints and future repairs and strengthening local advocacy for safer pedestrian access.

Description: The Underground Railroad Education Center constructed an accessible, indoor garden in the Arbor Hill neighborhood, whose residents lack access to fresh produce and gardening space. Designed for year-round use, the new hoop house represents an intergenerational collaboration between younger and older adults. Local teenagers created and installed planters and now help grow food there. Albany businesses and volunteers also contributed to the project by building benches for the site. Today, the Center grows produce, such as lettuce, in the greenhouse, which it donates to people in the community.

To address this, the coalition hosted two webinars for planners and housing groups on ADU benefits and mailed AARP's ADU guide to county offices. It also posted sample ordinances online to help communities act. The effort aims to spur adoption of ADUs for multigenerational living and aging in place. "We are hopeful that... more communities adopt local ordinances that permit ADUs," said the organization, which plans to expand outreach at its next annual conference.
