AARP Community Challenge Grant Year: 2024

Project Category: Walk Audits

Description: A key Phoenix corridor lacked safe, walkable conditions, creating hazards for older adults who rely on it as a primary route. To address this, TigerMountain Foundation led a walk audit that identified broken sidewalks and poor crossings, engaged volunteers and added several hazards to the city's official repair list. The project educated residents on how to report issues and spurred interest among officials to prioritize fixes. TMF used the city's 311 system to escalate forgotten repairs, ensuring improvements move forward.

AARP Community Challenge Grant Year: 2021

Project Category: Engaging residents in vibrant public places

Description: Organizers with Vida Senior Center were looking for ways to combat social isolation and create community cohesion during the COVID-19 pandemic. Many D.C. residents were practicing strict social distancing and remaining detached from their peers. To help people feel less isolated, Vida created Anos Dorados, a choir comprised of Spanish-speaking older adults. The choir performed virtually every Friday at the Center's weekly party. They also held eight free, in-person community concerts at events around the greater metropolitan area. Additionally, the choir produced a recording, which features seven songs reflecting Hispanic heritage.

Washington, DC

AARP Community Challenge Grant Year: 2022

Project Category: Engaging residents in vibrant public places

Description: Older adults in Washington, DC faced isolation and limited chances to share concerns with local leaders. Vida revived Tertulias-cultural gatherings blending conversation, music and food-to bridge that gap. Five events brought residents together with city officials to discuss transportation, housing and mental health while celebrating heritage through dance and song. These meetings gave participants a voice and strengthened community ties. One attendee, honored at age 100, said the recognition made him feel he truly belonged, underscoring the program's impact on inclusion.
