Description: Speeding traffic along a busy state highway made walking and biking in Wheelock Village hazardous, forcing parents to keep children from crossing the road. To address this, the town completed four walk audits on a half-mile stretch, identified hazards and shared findings at a community meeting and through a follow-up survey. Residents called for crosswalks, speed limit reductions and better signage. One participant said, "It would be great to slow the speed down in Wheelock, as well as have crosswalks with lights, more signs etc., and possibly a bike path." Next steps include funding speed monitoring and requesting a state scoping study to advance safety improvements.

Orosi, CA

Description: Rural Communities Resource Center organized six walk audits in Orosi to spotlight unsafe streets lacking sidewalks, crosswalks and speed controls. Nearly all participants were age 50-plus, documenting hazards and sharing findings at community meetings. The effort drew attention from local officials and empowered residents to advocate for safer infrastructure. One participant said, "After walking around our town... I felt happy that I could join with others who want to make Orosi a better and safer place."

Greenwood, MS

Description: Unsafe sidewalks and speeding traffic made walking hazardous for older adults in Greenwood. The project trained participants to use the MAPS-Mini audit tool, conduct walk audits and join community meetings to push for repairs and safer crossings. These efforts sparked advocacy for walkable neighborhoods and healthier lifestyles. One resident shared that previously she had to walk close to the curb, which created a dangerous path for her. Her story highlighted the need for change.
