Charleston, WV

Description: This project upgraded Charleston's East End Dog Park to make it usable for pet owners of all ages. The City planted trees, installed shade structures and added seating. They also made repairs to the park's water source and planted grass. In addition, City workers fenced off a section of the dog park specifically for smaller dogs, keeping them separate from larger breeds that can intimidate them.

Description: Grand Junction Parks and Recreation created a strength training circuit along a walking path in Sherwood Park. To achieve this, GJPR installed four pieces of equipment for working out leg, arm and core muscles, including a rowing machine, sit up and pull up station and leg press. The park once housed similar fitness equipment, but GJCR had to remove it in the mid-nineties due to rot. Today, many residents of the surrounding neighborhoods are 50 and older, and the new equipment gives them an option for a cardio workout and strength training. The fitness stations are available to the public seven days a week and those interested can register for free instruction on how to use them.
Gastonia, NC

Description: The Highland neighborhood lacked a safe outdoor space for older adults, as overgrown land and debris limited use of the existing garden. Keep Gastonia Beautiful expanded the garden by clearing the wooded area, adding accessible raised beds, installing ADA-friendly paths and placing new seating and fencing. Volunteers helped build structures and prepare the site while community workshops encouraged participation. The improvements increased safety, supported gardening and social activities and laid the groundwork for long-term features like shade structures and art installations. These are expected to strengthen the space as a gathering place for older adults.

The city transformed the lot into a 900-square-foot pocket park with ADA-compliant benches and tables, shade structures, bike racks and planters. Volunteers, many age 50-plus, helped build and plant the space, creating a safe, accessible spot for social connection. Now families picnic, children do homework and farmers market visitors gather, signaling renewed community pride. The park complements broader revitalization efforts and will expand as road improvements and building restorations progress.
