Description: The Red Chair Project gives older adults and people with disabilities attending community concerts and events the assurance that accessible, comfortable seating is available for them. FiftyNorth and Age-Friendly Northfield purchased 52 sturdy chairs with hand rests, as well as signage for use during outdoor events. City employees and volunteers set up the chairs for public gatherings, including the annual Defeat of Jesse James celebration and the Grand Parade.

Description: The North Pike Creek Wetlands is a 410-acre natural habitat located along the southern shore of Lake Superior. To help visitors with disabilities enjoy nature, Friends of the North Pike Creek Wetlands installed a wheelchair-accessible walkway. The path connects the wetlands' parking area to a pavilion and boardwalk. Project organizers say finishing the walkway prior to the COVID-19 pandemic was serendipitous because it accommodated thousands of visits from those looking for a safe space to enjoy the outdoors. Organizers also say the county has plans to replicate accessibility features in other nature areas.
Hibbing, MN

Description: The Hibbings Farmers' Market, a local market that participates in federal food assistance programs, is expanding its Power of Produce program, which provides discount tokens to older adults. To enable this, the market added a covered porch and chairs to its facilities, providing a shaded area for participants to meet local producers, attend events and socialize with other community members. Organizers ensured the seating area had non-slip, even flooring to accommodate marketgoers of all ages and abilities. Since completing the porch, more accessibility upgrades are in the works.

Project Category: Park enhancements
Description: To create social opportunities for people of all ages, the Town of New Milford added benches and game top tables along the walkway to the Young's Field Park. Town employees installed the tables, which can host chess and checkers games. Project organizers say they hope the tables encourage intergenerational activities in the riverfront park. Today, teens from a New Milford High School after-school club use the table for regular games with players from the New Milford Senior Center.
Bridgeport, CT

Project Category: Engaging people in transportation options/safety
Description: To create community cohesion and connection, Groundwork Bridgeport's walking club hosted three intergenerational walking events in Bridgeport's downtown and along its waterfront. Using the AARP Walk Audit Tool Kit as a guide, participants helped identify important community destinations, as well as ways to improve the pedestrian experience. They also collected litter as they walked. Before each walk, volunteers placed temporary wayfinding stickers on the sidewalks to help the group navigate. Project organizers say the initiative's popularity demonstrated an appetite for walking activities and pedestrian paths in Bridgeport. Today, the organization continues to host its walking club, which meets every Saturday.
