Greensboro, VT

AARP Community Challenge Grant Year: 2022

Project Category: Park enhancements

Description: Residents wanted safe outdoor access for mobility and therapy, but uneven terrain limited independence. The project built a nature trail with accessible tread, a boardwalk, and an improved viewing platform. It also added benches and signage to connect with village sidewalks. Now residents, families and staff use the trail for exercise and quiet breaks, and community members walk there daily. "Our new path and viewing platform and benches are being used... as a quiet, serene, restful place to regroup," said staff.

Plains, MT

AARP Community Challenge Grant Year: 2025

Project Category: Park enhancements

Description: Older adults in Plains needed low-cost exercise options, yet available facilities offered limited court space and few features designed for comfort or safety. The Plains Pickleball Association upgraded local courts with an equipment shed, benches, a windbreak and a paved walkway that created safer entry points and shaded places to rest. These additions also protected gear and improved access for players learning during beginner nights, where many older adults participate. The improvements encouraged more residents to stay active and socialize in a safe environment. Community members said the updates "provided the finishing touches," noting how the sheltered seating and stable walking surface made play more welcoming.

Abbeville, LA

AARP Community Challenge Grant Year: 2021

Project Category: Park enhancements

Description: Abbeville's Lafitte Drive-in Park is located in a neighborhood with few options for free recreational activities. To give residents a place to exercise, Abbeville Main Street created the Fit-Trail. Volunteers installed several stations along the park's walking path, each featuring a different piece of exercise equipment. The walk guides users through a series of exercises, including stretches, pull-ups, leg lifts and more. Organizers also installed signage explaining how to use each station, as well as a sign that congratulates visitors once they complete the course. Organizers say the fitness course gives residents a way to increase their physical activity, and also gives people a new reason to visit Lafitte Drive-in Park.

Bethel, CT

AARP Community Challenge Grant Year: 2024

Project Category: Accessibility of amenities

Description: Library programs often excluded people with hearing loss, especially older adults, because the community room lacked adaptive audio technology. The library installed a system that connects to its sound system and Wi-Fi, letting attendees control volume through personal devices or borrowed equipment. This upgrade improves access for library patrons, especially those with hearing challenges, enhancing participation in film screenings and educational programs. The system is also available to community groups using the space, fostering inclusion and engagement across events. One participant noted that she can now fully enjoy events without difficulty.
