Detroit, MI
AARP Community Challenge Grant Year: 2023
Project Category: Walkability
Description: Cracked sidewalks, poor lighting and flooding made walking hazardous in Detroit's Petoskey-Otsego neighborhood, limiting mobility for older adults and residents with disabilities. The organization led two walk audits to pinpoint risks and shape a neighborhood plan, sparking collaboration among residents, businesses and city agencies. The effort prompted repairs, debris removal and increased patrols, with plans for seating and shade to support aging residents. As one participant noted, "Participating in the walk audits helped me express the challenges I have as a blind person," a step toward lasting accessibility.
Chicago, IL
AARP Community Challenge Grant Year: 2023
Project Category: Walkability
Description: Busy intersections near a new commuter rail station posed safety risks for pedestrians, including older adults. The project conducted walk audits at four hazardous crossings and gathered input from nearby residents. Weekly walks and a workshop mapped risks and built partnerships for future improvements. Findings informed city proposals for upgrades such as sensors to monitor near misses, while plans for art and landscaping aim to create a safer, more inviting environment for people traveling on foot or bike.
Houston, TX
AARP Community Challenge Grant Year: 2023
Project Category: Walkability
Description: Cracked sidewalks and unsafe curb ramps along Washington Avenue made walking hazardous for older adults and people with mobility challenges. The coalition organized walk audits, trained volunteers and captured nearly 1,000 images to document issues, mapping them for public access. Surveys revealed widespread concerns about accessibility and safety. These efforts built momentum for a citywide sidewalk plan and proposals to repair curb ramps, while fostering collaboration among residents, businesses and city officials to create safer, more walkable streets.

Anderson, SC
AARP Community Challenge Grant Year: 2024
Project Category: Housing Choice Design Competitions
Description: Anderson County lacks affordable, accessible housing for older adults and people with disabilities, leaving many at risk of unsafe living conditions. The alliance hosted a housing design competition and charrettes to create realistic solutions, adapting plans after Hurricane Helene with virtual outreach and surveys. Five designs were unveiled for public voting, and the winning adaptive reuse concept inspired county leaders to explore converting vacant buildings into housing. Donated land and strong community engagement now position the county to expand options for low-income older adults.
Anderson, SC
AARP Community Challenge Grant Year: 2019
Project Category: Community Gardens
Description: To expose locals to art and grow food for people in need, Anderson Arts Center beautified its campus by creating a new mural and community garden. The first mural in Anderson, it depicts a rabbit alongside a colorful fruit and vegetables. Since its completion, it has inspired other local organizations to create their own murals around town. Project organizers say within the garden's first year, the Center taught nearly 500 children about growing fresh vegetables. The Arts Center, which celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2022, hosts gallery exhibitions featuring regional, national and international artists, orchestrates downtown public arts projects and is home to a summer arts camp and arts school for children and adults.
