Action Plan Download

An action plan is based on the results of community surveys identifying needs within the 8 Domains of Livability that influence the health and quality of life of older adults. While there is flexibility in how a plan is created and what it will do, every action plan includes a statement about what can be achieved, target dates for goal completion, identification of participating organizations and indicators to measure progress. The action plan is an "active" rather than static document. Revisions and amendments are a sign of program improvement and progress.

    Improve walkability and expand bus lines to increase connectivity.

  2. Housing

    Update zoning codes to increase housing supply and identify funding for additional low- and moderate-income subsidized housing for older adults.

Tompkins County's age-friendly progress report describes resources and amenities available to residents, including transportation programs, home modification resources and accessible outdoor spaces. The local age-friendly initiative has supported accessible on-demand transit. Additionally, they worked with local partners to provide affordable home repair assistance and provide ramps to make homes accessible. A rooftop community garden at an affordable housing community for older adults gives residents access to fresh food and a place to socialize. Additionally, the County offers monthly events and hosts an annual Senior Living Expo, which connects residents to resources to help them safely age in place in the community.

Project Category: Public art installations

Description: To improve the walkability and aesthetics of an industrial neighborhood in Binghamton, the Center for Technology and Innovation installed a 300-square-foot topographical map mural. Displayed along Wall Street, the artwork depicts a stretch of New York State from Cooperstown to Lake Erie. Organizers say the map aims to enliven pedestrian-friendly block connecting Northside residential neighborhood to downtown shopping areas and a regional transportation hub. The three-dimensional map, prepared with the help of the U.S. Geological Survey, is titled Here in the Heart of New York.

Project Category: Developing projects based on residents' priorities

Description: This project will install projectors and screens to expand the type and variety of programming, events and activities that can be provided to residents at six public housing buildings for older adults and people with disabilities.
