Action Plan Download

An action plan is based on the results of community surveys identifying needs within the 8 Domains of Livability that influence the health and quality of life of older adults. While there is flexibility in how a plan is created and what it will do, every action plan includes a statement about what can be achieved, target dates for goal completion, identification of participating organizations and indicators to measure progress. The action plan is an "active" rather than static document. Revisions and amendments are a sign of program improvement and progress.

Action Plan Highlights

  1. Respect and Inclusion

    Focus on the social dynamics around aging by developing a positive aging campaign that involves all residents, creating an 'intergenerational connections program' to encourage people of all ages to meet and share experiences, and building a mentorship program with local school districts that connects older adults and students and facilitates intergenerational relationships.

  2. Communication and Information

    Improve communications to the older adult community by launching a communication campaign that focuses on educating older adults about the benefits to utilizing all transportation options, collaborating, promoting, and sharing information on the local age-friendly initiative, evaluating the success of printed versus digital materials, and developing strategies for communicating and reaching out to different populations.

  3. Civic Participation and Employment

    Partner with the local chamber of commerce to create a program for older adults to support volunteerism, training and education, while also working with local agencies and education facilities to develop and communicate opportunities for older adults to obtain new learning and skills-based opportunities for growth.

Description: This project will conduct at least 15 walk audits with a minimum of 15 volunteers, focusing on people age 50 or over. The audits aim to identify areas needing sidewalk and crosswalk improvements.

Shanti Community Farms Inc. (2023)

Akron, OH

AARP Community Challenge Grant Year: 2023

Project Category: Community Gardens

Description: Shanti Community Farms created a Nepali garden to give older adults in Akron's diverse neighborhoods a place to grow familiar foods and reconnect with cultural traditions. Elevated beds made gardening easier, and families cultivated potatoes, mustard greens and Asian eggplant while preparing traditional dishes for picnics and farmers markets. The project boosted physical activity, improved diets and generated income through sales. It also strengthened intergenerational ties as grandparents gardened alongside grandchildren, reducing isolation and fostering community pride. Plans to expand into an education center promise lasting benefits.

ABOUT THE AARP COMMUNITY CHALLENGE

Launched in 2017, the annual AARP Community Challenge provides small grants to local governments and nonprofits in order to fund quick-action, ready-to-implement projects that can help communities become more livable for people of all ages.
