Action Plan Download

An action plan is based on the results of community surveys identifying needs within the 8 Domains of Livability that influence the health and quality of life of older adults. While there is flexibility in how a plan is created and what it will do, every action plan includes a statement about what can be achieved, target dates for goal completion, identification of participating organizations and indicators to measure progress. The action plan is an "active" rather than static document. Revisions and amendments are a sign of program improvement and progress.

Action Plan Highlights

  1. Health and Community Services

    Improve health outcomes for vulnerable and marginalized older adult communities by increasing access to primary care to improve respiratory and cardiovascular health outcomes.

  2. Transportation

    Promote carpooling through a ride matching program for older adults through recreation and community centers with the goal of replicating the program at other locations.

  3. Housing

    Create new programs to facilitate home improvements for older adults such as a registry of vetted contractors, financial assistance programs, and apprenticeships with local trade schools to cut costs of construction and labor. Expand alternative housing options like housing and shared housing.

Progress Report Download

St. Louis County's age-friendly progress report describes community successes related to health, mobility, accessibility and civic engagement. The County updated local community health disease profile data, which it publishes on the local health department's website. In partnership with Metro Transit, the community completed an analysis of its MetroBus system from the perspective of older adults. Data -- including input from transit users -- helped transportation planners identify future enhancements to the transit system, including plans for increased service and additional transit stops. St. Louis also created new programming to build intergenerational relationships, including establishing community gardening programs.

Description: Older adults at Hylton Point faced daily risks because drivers used the circular driveway as a shortcut, creating unsafe conditions at the building entrance and a nearby school. EverTrue installed speed bumps with signage, painted crosswalks and added secure bicycle storage to slow traffic and support active living. A safety fair drew older adults, students and workers who shared concerns and learned safe walking practices. One resident said the new bike storage gave them peace of mind. Surveys showed people felt safer and more connected, and the work prompted discussions about a future crosswalk signal.

ABOUT THE AARP COMMUNITY CHALLENGE

Launched in 2017, the annual AARP Community Challenge provides small grants to local governments and nonprofits in order to fund quick-action, ready-to-implement projects that can help communities become more livable for people of all ages.
