Action Plan Download

An action plan is based on the results of community surveys identifying needs within the 8 Domains of Livability that influence the health and quality of life of older adults. While there is flexibility in how a plan is created and what it will do, every action plan includes a statement about what can be achieved, target dates for goal completion, identification of participating organizations and indicators to measure progress. The action plan is an "active" rather than static document. Revisions and amendments are a sign of program improvement and progress.

Action Plan Highlights

  1. Housing

    Increase the availability of affordable housing through a comprehensive review of the most recent housing plan, and by promoting a diverse mix of hosuing types and providing support for volunteer programs that address housing affordability.

  2. Transportation

    Implement an updated transpotration plan that addresses changes in local and regional growth and new state transportation policies by determining a preferred alternative to address downtown congestion, exploring alternate routes and roadway designs, creating traffic management strategies, increasing bicycle and pedestrian options, adding new signage, and centralizing public parking.

  3. Outdoor Spaces

    Focus on trail systems by expanding and integrating equestrian, bicycle and hiking trails throughout the county, connecting unincorporated rural communities with downtown, linking the community to larger, nearby cities, and facilitating access to recreational areas.

AARP Community Challenge Grant Year: 2024

Project Category: Digital navigation skills

Description: This project will support digital skills training for Latino/a community members across a tri-county region. By targeting outreach to older adults, the sponsor hopes to increase their participation by 65 percent.

Crook County on the Move (2018)

Prineville, OR

AARP Community Challenge Grant Year: 2018

Project Category: Park enhancements

Description: When organizers with Crook County on the Move asked older adults what they would like to see in Ochoco Creek Park, they overwhelmingly asked for more places to sit along the park's 1.5-mile pathway. So to increase accessibility, the organization installed 12 park benches at 300 foot intervals along the walkway. Each bench has a 4-foot space surrounding it to accommodate wheelchair users and give people a space to park walkers and strollers. Organizers hope the benches inspire older adults and people with mobility challenges to visit the park and reap the benefits of outdoor exercise. Spurred by the success of this project, Crook County on the Move fundraised to install an additional 12 benches along the path. Organizers say they are now looking to install benches in other parks around Crook County.

ABOUT THE AARP COMMUNITY CHALLENGE

Launched in 2017, the annual AARP Community Challenge provides small grants to local governments and nonprofits in order to fund quick-action, ready-to-implement projects that can help communities become more livable for people of all ages.
