Action Plan Download
San Rafael developed its action plan through the lens of diversity--San Rafael is the most diverse city in Marin County, and there are distinct racial inequities in income and health outcomes for older adults within the community. The plan works to combat ageism as a social determinant of health, recognizing that ageism can damage all aspects of an older person's life, including in the workplace, family life, health care, overall health, and civic participation. Through the age-friendly initiative, San Rafael is working with the non-profit community to help older adults gain access to food, social and learning opportunities, and mental health resources.
Action Plan Highlights
Housing
Promote aging in place by streamlining home retrofit permitting and processes.Civic Participation and Employment
Reduce agism in the workplace by fostering intergenerational communications, highlighting older adults as an integral and necessary component of the business community, and connecting older adults with job fairs and employment hubs.Outdoor Spaces
Expand opportunities for older adults to safely participate in outdoor community life by repairing, replacing and improving existing infrastructure, creating shade structures and exercise equipment in parks and open spaces, assuring that parks and community spaces have working water fountains, and encouraging neighborhood walking groups.
