Action Plan Download

An action plan is based on the results of community surveys identifying needs within the 8 Domains of Livability that influence the health and quality of life of older adults. While there is flexibility in how a plan is created and what it will do, every action plan includes a statement about what can be achieved, target dates for goal completion, identification of participating organizations and indicators to measure progress. The action plan is an "active" rather than static document. Revisions and amendments are a sign of program improvement and progress.

Action Plan Highlights

  1. Transportation

    Improve pedestrian infrastructure and advocate for Complete Streets interventions to encourage walking and biking. Increase access to public transportation.

  2. Housing

    Establish an affordable housing trust fund and create incentives for developers to build affordable rental units. Promote infill development by easing restrictions on accessory dwelling units.

  3. Outdoor Spaces

    Assess existing parks and recreation facilities, conduct community engagement to identify residents' outdoor space needs and create a new parks master plan. Ensure planning efforts prioritize accessibility.

Project Category: Roadway/sidewalks/crosswalk improvement

Description: The City of Memphis hoped to encourage residents of the Crosstown neighborhood to walk. They replaced and repaired sidewalks at the Lewis Center, the local senior center. To encourage people to use a new urban walking trail, the City also installed signage directing people to the path. A designated rest stop along the trail includes benches and planters, giving walkers a place to stretch, rest and socialize. Future plans include upgrades to crosswalks at the neighborhood senior center, as well as accessibility improvements at other public facilities and outdoor spaces. The Lewis Center also hopes to convene walking groups, giving older adults the opportunity to exercise in a social setting.

Project Category: Addressing community health

Description: To combat food insecurity and increase opportunities for socialization, this project created The Exodus Marketplace. The space now hosts a monthly farmers market, a book club and more.
