Action Plan Download

An action plan is based on the results of community surveys identifying needs within the 8 Domains of Livability that influence the health and quality of life of older adults. While there is flexibility in how a plan is created and what it will do, every action plan includes a statement about what can be achieved, target dates for goal completion, identification of participating organizations and indicators to measure progress. The action plan is an "active" rather than static document. Revisions and amendments are a sign of program improvement and progress.

Action Plan Highlights

  1. Health and Community Services

    Highlight health and wellness activities through the design and implementation of a citywide communication plan.

  2. Housing

    Provide education on affordable housing strategies and offer alternative housing options near transit by working with homeowners and private property owners.

  3. Outdoor Spaces

    Work to prevent crime in public spaces by conducting Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED) trainings for maintenance staff.

Description: Fairmount Avenue is a busy corridor lined with housing for older adults and other essential services, where people using mobility devices face daily safety risks. Bike San Diego responded by leading bike and walk audits with residents who live and travel the route, capturing firsthand details about crossing times, curb access and confusing signage. Findings were translated into specific recommendations and shared with teams updating long-range city plans. One participant said that he has noticed people with manual wheelchairs often struggled to get to the other side in time. By grounding planning discussions in lived experience, the project increased the chance that future street changes better reflect how older adults actually move through the corridor.

Project description was created using generative AI and then reviewed for accuracy.

ABOUT THE AARP COMMUNITY CHALLENGE

Launched in 2017, the annual AARP Community Challenge provides small grants to local governments and nonprofits in order to fund quick-action, ready-to-implement projects that can help communities become more livable for people of all ages.
