Action Plan Download

An action plan is based on the results of community surveys identifying needs within the 8 Domains of Livability that influence the health and quality of life of older adults. While there is flexibility in how a plan is created and what it will do, every action plan includes a statement about what can be achieved, target dates for goal completion, identification of participating organizations and indicators to measure progress. The action plan is an "active" rather than static document. Revisions and amendments are a sign of program improvement and progress.

Action Plan Highlights

  1. Outdoor Spaces

    Create an outdoor gathering space at the local community center, as well as an intergenerational community garden.

  2. Transportation

    Implement traffic calming interventions on major thoroughfares, including speed bumps, stop signs, roundabouts and "slow zones."

  3. Health and Community Services

    Offer dementia-friendly educational opportunities and brain fitness classes for older adults.

Description: This project will build and maintain a garden for growing fruit, vegetables and flowers. The city will add raised beds and accessible benches to accommodate older gardeners. They will also hold classes and other gatherings onsite.

City of Chula Vista Age-Friendly Communities Initiative (2021)

Project Category: Developing projects based on residents' priorities

Description: To honor community elders and bring awareness to the value of older adults in the community, the City of Chula Vista invited older residents to submit photographs and stories of their lives. They then selected several to adorn banners, which the City displayed on light posts along major streets. Additionally, the banners included the URL for a website where residents can read the featured stories and find age-friendly resources. This program ensures that the older adults in our lives know that they are appreciated for the important role they have in our community, Mayor Mary Casillas Salas said.

Launched in 2017, the annual AARP Community Challenge provides small grants to local governments and nonprofits in order to fund quick-action, ready-to-implement projects that can help communities become more livable for people of all ages.
