Action Plan Download

An action plan is based on the results of community surveys identifying needs within the 8 Domains of Livability that influence the health and quality of life of older adults. While there is flexibility in how a plan is created and what it will do, every action plan includes a statement about what can be achieved, target dates for goal completion, identification of participating organizations and indicators to measure progress. The action plan is an "active" rather than static document. Revisions and amendments are a sign of program improvement and progress.

Action Plan Highlights

  1. Transportation

    Support active transportation by creating designated pathways for cyclists and pedestrians and working to implement the community's Complete Streets policy.

  2. Health and Community Services

    Identify at-risk residents in need of extra support during emergency situations, such as evacuations.

  3. Housing

    Expand home repair assistance programs and help homeowners implement universal design updates to homes to make them more accessible.

Project Category: Transportation Other

Description: As transit systems moved schedules, fares and maps online, many older adults in Glen Cove struggled to use buses and trains without digital skills. Age-Friendly Glen Cove addressed that barrier through hands-on workshops that paired transit app training with real trips on local buses and rail. Older adults received one-on-one help from trained volunteers, including youth tutors, and practiced planning routes and paying fares in real time. One couple said learning the app gave them confidence to travel together by train for the first time in years. By combining digital training with practical experience and local advocacy, the project expanded mobility options and helped residents stay connected to daily activities and community life.

ABOUT THE AARP COMMUNITY CHALLENGE

Launched in 2017, the annual AARP Community Challenge provides small grants to local governments and nonprofits in order to fund quick-action, ready-to-implement projects that can help communities become more livable for people of all ages.
