Action Plan Download

An action plan is based on the results of community surveys identifying needs within the 8 Domains of Livability that influence the health and quality of life of older adults. While there is flexibility in how a plan is created and what it will do, every action plan includes a statement about what can be achieved, target dates for goal completion, identification of participating organizations and indicators to measure progress. The action plan is an "active" rather than static document. Revisions and amendments are a sign of program improvement and progress.

Action Plan Highlights

  1. Housing

    Offer additional housing options for family members looking to provide care for loved ones by updating zoning to allow ADUs.

  2. Social Participation

    Organize evening events for older residents like 50+ dance nights and wakeling soccer tournaments by partnering with non-governmental organizations.

  3. Civic Participation and Employment

    Educate older adults on topics like identifying home-based, part-time and job-sharing employment opportunities, filing age discrimination claims, and starting a business by developing a series of easy-to-comprehend fact sheets.

Project Category: Transportation Systems Change

Description: The project features a design competition, which invites participants to imagine pop-up placemaking options for a local farmers market. The parking lot for a local food bank will be re-imagined with better parking layout, a basketball court mural, and shaded space for customers to wait. A walk audit will identify potential areas for sidewalk improvements and the placement of benches.

Bike Friendly South Dallas (2020)

Project Category: Bikeability

Description: To work toward creating a safe, bikeable community, Bike Friendly South Dallas expanded its Hub and Spoke program, a partnership with local organizations to install bike repair stations throughout the community. Project organizers installed seven repair stations, as well as cabinets filled with tools for repairs, in an area of South Dallas with no bike shops. Bike Friendly South Dallas also provided training on bike repair skills and bike safety to local partner organizations.

Launched in 2017, the annual AARP Community Challenge provides small grants to local governments and nonprofits in order to fund quick-action, ready-to-implement projects that can help communities become more livable for people of all ages.
