Age-Friendly Taskforce/Advisory Council/Commission

An action plan is based on the results of community surveys identifying needs within the 8 Domains of Livability that influence the health and quality of life of older adults. While there is flexibility in how a plan is created and what it will do, every action plan includes a statement about what can be achieved, target dates for goal completion, identification of participating organizations and indicators to measure progress. The action plan is an "active" rather than static document. Revisions and amendments are a sign of program improvement and progress.

Fairfax's age-friendly progress report highlights accomplishments related to housing, transportation and outdoor spaces. To make its outdoor spaces more welcoming, the community added age-friendly benches, LED lighting and drinking fountains in parks. Fairfax also worked to improve street infrastructure and sidewalks, add new bus stops and launch transportation initiatives geared toward older adults' needs. Partnering with local organizations, Fairfax is attempting to bolster local emergency preparedness. To ensure residents feel included, the City prioritized age-friendly events and recruited older adults for volunteer efforts. Additionally, the progress report details the community's support for age-friendly employment opportunities, improved online communications and community forums to educate residents on a variety of issues.
