Action Plan Download

An action plan is based on the results of community surveys identifying needs within the 8 Domains of Livability that influence the health and quality of life of older adults. While there is flexibility in how a plan is created and what it will do, every action plan includes a statement about what can be achieved, target dates for goal completion, identification of participating organizations and indicators to measure progress. The action plan is an "active" rather than static document. Revisions and amendments are a sign of program improvement and progress.

Eliot's progress report focuses on the community's efforts to help residents age in place, enhance public spaces and increase opportunities for active transportation. The local age-friendly initiative has advocated for commonsense policies to allow older adults to remain in the community. To that end, Eliot launched a property tax assistance initiative, expanded financial assistance to households in need and update local ordinance to allow accessory dwelling units. Two public spaces -- the Eliot Boat Basin and Frost Tufts Park -- saw upgrades, including added seating and improved landscaping. The age-friendly initiative also contributed to a report on local conditions for walking and biking, which ultimately garnered funding for extending the town's sidewalk network.

Project Category: Park enhancements

Description: To create a more accessible space for all ages, the Eliot Aging in Place Committee installed five benches on the Eliot Boat Basin, located on the banks of the Piscataqua River. The project was a community effort -- volunteers assembled the benches and transported them to their permanent locations. A key goal was to increase walkability and improve health and quality of life for residents. To achieve that, the Aging in Place Committee chose the bench design specifically with older adults' comfort in mind. Project organizers hope the benches -- placed along the waterfront and near a playground -- give visitors a place to rest, allowing them to enjoy walks in the park. Following their installation, the Committee secured funding for additional benches for the town's library.

Description: This project will create a community garden with raised garden beds and vertical gardens to enable older residents of local senior housing communities to grow their own food.
