Action Plan Download

An action plan is based on the results of community surveys identifying needs within the 8 Domains of Livability that influence the health and quality of life of older adults. While there is flexibility in how a plan is created and what it will do, every action plan includes a statement about what can be achieved, target dates for goal completion, identification of participating organizations and indicators to measure progress. The action plan is an "active" rather than static document. Revisions and amendments are a sign of program improvement and progress.

Progress Report Download

Corte Madera's age-friendly progress report shows what the community has done to make public spaces, transportation and housing conditions more age-friendly. To combat social isolation, the community opened its Age-Friendly Intergenerational Center, a place for residents to congregate and participate in activities and classes. The local age-friendly team also launched its Cycling Without Age program. The initiative allows participants to ride a three-wheeled trishaw, designed to be more stable and accessible for cyclists of all ages. To improve walkability, the community mapped out the locations of benches, restrooms and drinking fountains. Addtionally, the Town worked with a local nonprofit focused on the Villages model, which offers support to older adults so they can age in place.

Project Category: Public space activation

Description: Older adults in San Francisco's Tenderloin neighborhood lacked safe outdoor spaces and faced isolation in single-room housing. The project transformed Dodge Alley with a vibrant mural, native plants, ADA-compliant benches, bistro tables and permanent string lighting. Monthly events featuring music, art and games turned the alley into a welcoming gathering spot. Residents now help maintain the space, and city agencies plan further upgrades.

Project Category: Walk Audits

Description: San Francisco's Little Chinatown corridor lacked safe, accessible infrastructure for pedestrians, leaving older adults and people with disabilities at risk. The project conducted three walk audits with volunteers and local officials, documenting hazards and gathering input from business owners and parents. Findings highlighted needs for stop signs, improved bus stops and accessibility upgrades. A local business owner stated that these infrastructure improvements will increase safety and access. The audits sparked plans for placemaking improvements, including safety bollards and street art.

ABOUT THE AARP COMMUNITY CHALLENGE

Launched in 2017, the annual AARP Community Challenge provides small grants to local governments and nonprofits in order to fund quick-action, ready-to-implement projects that can help communities become more livable for people of all ages.
