Cedar Rapids developed its action plan under the leadership of a steering committee composed of local community and business leaders, nonprofit leaders, and those with strong connections to older populations. An age-friendly survey, conducted by AARP in early 2019, kicked-off discussions around aging in the community. Feedback from residents, community leaders, and city staff, along with research and best practices, shaped the goals and actions for this plan. The plan focuses on connecting residents of all ages, abilities and interests, and providing innovative housing options for all incomes and ages so that residents can remain active in their communities.
Action Plan Highlights

Outdoor SpacesCreate more interactive community events geared towards all age groups.
Social ParticipationEngage older adults by fostering social connection and digital literacy through senior-oriented technology classes, and develop outreach and engagement plans that reflect the unique culture, strengths and needs of residents who traditionally experience a lack of connection, including veterans, people with disabilities, BIPOC, LGBTQ+, and nursing home and assisted living residents.
