Action Plan Download

An action plan is based on the results of community surveys identifying needs within the 8 Domains of Livability that influence the health and quality of life of older adults. While there is flexibility in how a plan is created and what it will do, every action plan includes a statement about what can be achieved, target dates for goal completion, identification of participating organizations and indicators to measure progress. The action plan is an "active" rather than static document. Revisions and amendments are a sign of program improvement and progress.

  1. Transportation

    Encourage age-friendly active transportation through complete streets efforts and walkability improvements, as well bicycle route planning.

  2. Housing

    Foster housing affordability by supporting diverse options, including townhouses, tiny houses, accessory dwelling units and other higher-density housing.

  3. Civic Participation and Employment

    Support local economic and workforce development efforts focused on employment and community service opportunities for older adults. Assist local small businesses and entrepreneurs by creating business incubators and offering tax incentives.

Project Category: Park enhancements

Description: Bazemore Park had no seating or shade, leaving older adults without a safe, comfortable place to gather or enjoy nature. To address this, the agency installed a 12-foot octagonal gazebo with benches and added string lights for usability. Volunteers assembled the structure and hosted a ribbon-cutting celebration. The new covered space now serves as a hub for social connection near homes, churches and a fire station, encouraging outdoor activity and community events-benefits tied to improved health and reduced isolation.

Bike Walk Golden Isles (2024)

Brunswick, GA

Project Category: Bike Audits

Description: Brunswick lacked safe bike routes linking downtown to schools and jobs, leaving residents, many reliant on walking or biking, facing hazards along a key corridor. The group led a two-part audit of 1.3 miles on MLK Jr. Blvd./Altama Ave., documenting obstacles and safety concerns to guide future trail planning. The effort raised visibility and prompted local officials to begin early planning for a multi-use path. One auditor said the process revealed "how the little things add up" for cyclists and pedestrians navigating the area.

Launched in 2017, the annual AARP Community Challenge provides small grants to local governments and nonprofits in order to fund quick-action, ready-to-implement projects that can help communities become more livable for people of all ages.
