Action Plan Download

An action plan is based on the results of community surveys identifying needs within the 8 Domains of Livability that influence the health and quality of life of older adults. While there is flexibility in how a plan is created and what it will do, every action plan includes a statement about what can be achieved, target dates for goal completion, identification of participating organizations and indicators to measure progress. The action plan is an "active" rather than static document. Revisions and amendments are a sign of program improvement and progress.

    Make downtown safer by advocating for new sidewalks, crosswalks, intersections, and lighting.

    Facilitate home repairs for older adults through a list of trusted and vetted handymen and contractors.

    Promote existing communication channels and volunteer networks that focus on older adults.

Progress Report Download

In its age-friendly progress report, Berwick for a Lifetime described its successes since completing its 2019 action plan. To improve walkability in the community, they delivered sand to residents, helping them keep their sidewalks passable in winter weather. Part of larger redevelopment efforts, BFAL advocated for age-friendly street infrastructure -- including sidewalks, crosswalks and lighting -- in Berwick's downtown. They promoted the local walking group, which caters to participants of all abilities. They also educated older adults about the community's on-demand ride service. To help residents age in place in the community, BFAL launched an educational campaign on property tax exemptions. The town's library also offers adaptive tools for check-out to help residents make simple home repairs. Additionally, BFAL worked to provide food assistance, host social events and promote volunteering and civic engagement.

Project Category: Innovative home maintenance, repair and support services

Description: Older residents in Berwick faced challenges staying independent without access to adaptive tools. The committee launched a Handy Helper Tool Collection with more than 55 items-such as jar openers, grab bars and ergonomic garden tools-available for borrowing at the library. A shelving unit and wheeled bag allowed volunteers to bring the collection to farmers markets and town events. One visitor said that she would look into starting a similar program in her town. The program helps residents remain in their homes longer and raises awareness of practical solutions for aging in place.
