Action Plan Download
Belgrade developed its action plan through extensive community involvement, including an age-friendly survey, virtual focus groups, and in-person open houses with the goal of creating a desirable location for people to live, work and retire. Belgrade's age-friendly initiative follows four guiding principles: Communication - Establish an environment that encourages open communication, transparency and awareness among all residents Collaboration - Expand cooperative networks to support residents and provide meaningful opportunities for resident involvement Accessibility - Recognize the differing capacities and capabilities of older residents and support independence through the design, development and maintenance of sidewalks, pathways and buildings Mobility - Ensure residents of all ages have access to programs and services both locally and regionally by championing affordable and safe transportation options
Action Plan Highlights
Outdoor Spaces
Improve outdoor accessibility by increasing the number of appropriately spaced rest areas along major pedestrian routes, focusing on building and painting benches with local artists to represent community history and ideals, and creating opportunities for residents to dedicate a bench.Transportation
Increase awareness of existing regional transportation services by creating a brochure highlighting transportation options and establishing a local community shuttle service for older residents.Housing
Create more opportunities for aging in place by establishing a senior advisory committee to focus on policy and planning, creating a group purchasing program for home maintenance services and coordinating a work experience program with the local high school to do home renovations.
