Action Plan Download

An action plan is based on the results of community surveys identifying needs within the 8 Domains of Livability that influence the health and quality of life of older adults. While there is flexibility in how a plan is created and what it will do, every action plan includes a statement about what can be achieved, target dates for goal completion, identification of participating organizations and indicators to measure progress. The action plan is an "active" rather than static document. Revisions and amendments are a sign of program improvement and progress.

Action Plan Highlights

  1. Outdoor Spaces

    Improve public spaces by increasing access to rest places and walking areas, installing friendship benches to provide additional seating and help reduce social isolation, and advocating for increased crosswalk safety and local business education programs to city council.

  2. Transportation

    Work with local partners to increase access to affordable and accessible transportation options for non-drivers and collaborate with city council to increase enforcement of winter snow removal regulations.

  3. Housing

    Promote options for aging in place by increase access to home repair and home maintenance services by educating residents on existing programs and increasing access to low-income independent living housing options.

Project Category: Walkability

Description: High-speed corridors and limited accessibility made walking unsafe for older adults in Auburn, yet community input was missing from early design stages. The city organized walk audits where older residents and schoolchildren identified hazards and shared priorities for safer streets. The effort produced design data for two state-funded projects and a future funding request. One participant, who is legally blind, highlighted barriers during the walk, giving others firsthand insight into accessibility challenges and shaping plans for improvements.

Project Category: Community Gardens

Description: The Raymond Village Library hoped to create an accessible community amenity to foster intergenerational relationships. So they worked to create a community garden. Volunteers installed benches, shade structures and solar lighting, as well as a graded path and waist-high planters designed to be accessible for gardeners with disabilities. To make garden upkeep easier, they also added rain barrels and a drip irrigation system.

Launched in 2017, the annual AARP Community Challenge provides small grants to local governments and nonprofits in order to fund quick-action, ready-to-implement projects that can help communities become more livable for people of all ages.
