Edgemont, SD

AARP Community Challenge Grant Year: 2021

Project Category: Expansion and enhancement of transportation options

Description: For residents of Edgemont, the nearest health care providers are located at least 25 miles away. Furthermore, the small, rural town didn't have any public transit service. To help residents get around, the West River Transit Authority piloted a new transportation system. The Authority hired a part-time driver to provide on-demand rides three days a week. Geared toward residents who don't drive, the service also transports residents to pharmacies, grocery stores and other essential amenities. To help inform the community about the new service, the Authority advertised through mailings and local ads. Project organizers hope to continue to expand on-demand transportation offerings in the future.

AARP Community Challenge Grant Year: 2025

Project Category: Expanding HighSpeed Internet

Description: Veterans age 50 and over struggled to secure housing and stay connected to essential services because they lacked reliable internet access and digital tools. Without technology, researching rentals, applying for assistance or keeping up with local resources was difficult and time consuming. Community Action of Laramie County addressed this gap by expanding access to computers and internet connectivity. They guided support so veterans could search for housing, apply for jobs and connect with food, housing and assistance programs while working with case managers. The project also introduced regular educational presentations that shared current information on benefits and community resources. These tools helped veterans act sooner and avoid housing instability. One participant said access to computers and internet allowed him to apply for permanent housing and jobs, adding that the support helped him feel more confident as he worked toward self sufficiency.
