Older Veterans in Gratiot County struggled to access benefits and services without reliable internet or computers. The project established a Computer Lab with high-speed Wi-Fi, three computers, monitors, tables and a printer. This allowed them to now offer scanning and printing five days a week. The lab is helping Veterans complete claims, take classes and connect with agencies. One Veteran shared that after months of delays, the lab and after-hours support enabled him and his spouse to secure health benefits. Plans include adding computer training and partnering with a local college.

Project Category: Public spaces improvements to increase high-speed internet availability
Description: The Boston Public Library offers free, 24-hour Wi-Fi access at outdoor locations around the city. However, many of these workstations were not convenient or equipped for older adults. To fix this, the library expanded the program into new neighborhoods, targeting areas with older populations, low internet adoption rates and low median household income. At each new Wi-Fi workstation, the library installed furniture, solar-powered string lights, age-friendly seating, plants and other decorative items.

Description: Older adults in Lansing faced high costs and limited options for fitness, leaving many without access to health programs. Lansing Parks launched a low-cost monthly membership giving people unlimited access to 36 classes across four centers including Tai Chi and Enhanced Fitness. The program enrolled 69 participants and boosted social connections. One participant noted that she has been feeling and looking better since starting the class. Plans include adding more classes and sustaining the model to keep older adults active and engaged.

Project Category: Roadway/sidewalks/crosswalk improvement
Description: Faded crosswalks and a worn roundabout near Mt. Hope STEAM school left pedestrians and cyclists vulnerable, especially older adults and children from nearby low-income neighborhoods. To improve safety and encourage active transportation, the city installed six bike racks at two parks and organized a volunteer event to paint crosswalks and refresh the intersection with art. These changes aim to slow traffic, increase driver yielding and boost bike ridership. The project also inspired other neighborhoods to pursue similar improvements and prompted plans for a citywide toolkit to replicate crosswalk painting.
