Hackensack, NJ
AARP Community Challenge Grant Year: 2023
Project Category: Public place improvements to withstand extreme weather events
Description: Flooding repeatedly damaged homes in Hackensack's low-lying neighborhoods, where many older adults lacked resources for protection. To spark action, the foundation launched "Barrels o' Art," a public display of 11 artist-painted rain barrels in a local park and distributed 21 barrels to residents. The project raised awareness of green infrastructure and environmental preservation, strengthened community trust and inspired future art-based initiatives to promote flood prevention.
Oklahoma City, OK
AARP Community Challenge Grant Year: 2021
Project Category: Public place improvements to withstand extreme weather events
Description: An Oklahoma County study showed many residents rely on public water systems that have been cited for health violations. Oklahoma City officials hoped green infrastructure could help resolve water quality issues for downstream communities. So the City converted two flowerbeds in a local park in to rain gardens -- also known as bioswales. During heavy rains, the swales collect stormwater runoff from a nearby parking lot and divert it back into the ground, rather than into the municipal sewer system. This helps remove pollutants before they reach the local watershed. Project organizers say they hope the pilot allows Oklahoma City to become a leader in green infrastructure. They have planned to add more bioswales throughout the community in the future.

Wellston, OK
AARP Community Challenge Grant Year: 2022
Project Category: Park enhancements
Description: Wellston's park lacked safe, accessible features, forcing families to travel elsewhere for recreation and creating barriers for older adults. The town installed ADA-compliant picnic tables with UV shade coverings and created a safe walking area, with volunteers helping to ensure proper grading. These upgrades made the park a welcoming space for gatherings and outdoor activity. The improvements have sparked interest in adding features like a splash pad and expanded trails, signaling momentum for long-term revitalization.
McLoud, OK
AARP Community Challenge Grant Year: 2023
Project Category: Transportation Systems Change
Description: Older adults in the tribe faced isolation and limited mobility in a rural area with few transportation options. To reconnect tribal elders with cultural traditions and community life, the tribe organized trips, including transportation for 52 participants to the Meskwaki Powwow and a community viewing of Killers of the Flower Moon. These events revived cherished traditions and strengthened social ties. "Without this... I would not have been able to take a trip and see my old friends in Iowa," one elder said. The project prompted policy changes to fund future trips and inspired similar efforts by neighboring tribes.
