The Town of Bedford installed benches, bike racks, signage and trash cans along walking and bike routes, including a path known locally as the Loop, as well as two newer paths. The Town created a map to display in kiosks, which show three different options for walking the paths. Public art was a focus of this project -- the benches and racks were designed by local artists and a local metal fabrication company built them. To include residents in the planning process, the Town held a Design the Sign workshop, where attendees suggested their ideas for sign graphics. An artist then incorporated those suggestions in the final design. Project organizers say improvements to the Loop have brought awareness for the Town's efforts to revitalize the Bridge Street area.

Description: To improve its South Meadows Greenway trail network, Goodwin University created a wheelchair accessible picnic area. The University installed four picnic tables with seating in a location overlooking the Connecticut River. In collaboration with the East Hartford Senior Center, university officials then hosted trail walks with the goal of increasing healthy outdoor recreation for residents of the largely industrial City of East Hartford. Goodwin's campus is located on a former EPA-designated brownfield site, which the school cleaned up. Through its improvements to trails, the university hopes to improve livability in East Hartford.
Tampa, FL

Description: The City of Tampa closed a dangerous sidewalk gap that forced people near a housing community to walk close to traffic for everyday trips. For older adults, the missing link limited independence and made routine walks feel unsafe as vehicle volumes increased along the corridor. The city completed a continuous stretch of sidewalk, creating an accessible route that connected residents to nearby streets and transit stops. Neighborhood volunteers helped mark the opening, and residents quickly incorporated the safer path into daily routines. The change reshaped how people moved through the area. One nearby resident said the sidewalk completed her regular walking loop and made her feel safe again. The project also strengthened coordination between the city, the housing community and the neighborhood association, supporting future pedestrian improvements.
