Project Category: Accessibility of amenities
Description: Older adults at South Side Library faced barriers to technology and browsing due to vision and mobility issues, limiting access to resources. The library installed large-print keyboards on all public computers and added magnification tools throughout collections. It also provided mobility aids like a wheelchair, walker and cane. These changes eased stress and encouraged independence. Patrons now browse DVDs and use computers with confidence. One visitor said after borrowing a rollator, "I'll be visiting the library way more often now."

Bayfield, WI
AARP Community Challenge Grant Year: 2019
Project Category: Accessibility of amenities
Description: The North Pike Creek Wetlands is a 410-acre natural habitat located along the southern shore of Lake Superior. To help visitors with disabilities enjoy nature, Friends of the North Pike Creek Wetlands installed a wheelchair-accessible walkway. The path connects the wetlands' parking area to a pavilion and boardwalk. Project organizers say finishing the walkway prior to the COVID-19 pandemic was serendipitous because it accommodated thousands of visits from those looking for a safe space to enjoy the outdoors. Organizers also say the county has plans to replicate accessibility features in other nature areas.
Bethel, CT
AARP Community Challenge Grant Year: 2024
Project Category: Accessibility of amenities
Description: Library programs often excluded people with hearing loss, especially older adults, because the community room lacked adaptive audio technology. The library installed a system that connects to its sound system and Wi-Fi, letting attendees control volume through personal devices or borrowed equipment. This upgrade improves access for library patrons, especially those with hearing challenges, enhancing participation in film screenings and educational programs. The system is also available to community groups using the space, fostering inclusion and engagement across events. One participant noted that she can now fully enjoy events without difficulty.

Project Category: Public art installations
Description: Public art near a new downtown pedestrian bridge serves to draw in visitors and promote nature, trails and biking along the Mississippi River. Get Fit Itasca and the Itasca County Family YMCA commissioned a local artist to create a canoe sculpture for the site. They also installed two benches and a three-sided map kiosk nearby. The project's success attracted additional funding, which the organizations used to install trail signs, revamp a nearby park and create a storybook walk.
